Green Earth Institute (GEI), an investee of PIEF, was selected by the Ministry of the Environment as the administrator of the pilot project to build a recycling system for plastics and other resources to support a decarbonized society, an initiative for production and social implementation of CO2-saving jet fuel or raw material using biomass waste.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), represented by jet fuel using biomass, is regarded as an indispensable means for reducing CO2 emissions, as one of the countermeasures to prevent global warming, which has become an urgent issue for the aviation industry including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Since 2018 GEI has participated in JAL’s “Let’s fly in 100,000 articles of clothing! JAL’s Bio-Jet Fuel Flight” and in March 2020, they produced bio-jet fuel derived from used clothing. Finally in February 2021, GEI achieved the first flight in Japan using domestic bio-jet fuel.

This time GEI’s proposal for the production of bio-jet fuel from ethanol derived from woody biomass was selected by the Ministry of the Environment for a pilot project for production and social implementation of CO2-saving jet fuel or raw material using biomass waste.

Under the management philosophy “Fostering green technology and walking with the earth,” GEI is working to solve various global issues, and through this pilot project with the Ministry of the Environment, GEI will promote the implementation of SAF in our everyday lives and contribute to the realization of a recycling-oriented society.
